May 20, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports concerning the killing of a political activist and the assault on a Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) during an inspection of an allegedly illegal stone quarry in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.
According to reports, the incident occurred on May 12, 2026, in the Shirgaon area of Virar East when the activist and the revenue officer visited the quarry site following complaints about illegal mining activities that had reportedly been submitted through a government portal. A group allegedly linked to the quarry operators is accused of attacking the two officials upon their arrival.
The activist lost his life in the assault, while the MRO sustained injuries. Reports indicate that the victims were forcibly dragged out of their vehicle and attacked with sticks and stones. The attackers also allegedly vandalised the vehicle used for the inspection.
Taking serious note of the incident, the NHRC observed that the allegations, if found to be true, raise grave concerns regarding violations of the victims’ human rights. The Commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, and the District Magistrate of Palghar, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission has directed the authorities to provide updates on the progress of the investigation as well as the current health condition of the injured revenue officer. The NHRC’s intervention underscores concerns over the safety of public officials and citizens involved in reporting or investigating alleged illegal activities.
