June 1, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to entertain a plea seeking that the proposed re-test for NEET-UG 2026 be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode instead of the existing pen-and-paper format.
A Bench comprising Justices P. S. Narasimha and Aravind Kumar observed that there was no question of conducting the re-examination in CBT mode, noting that the National Testing Agency (NTA) was already grappling with multiple challenges following the cancellation of the examination.
During the hearing, the Court indicated that altering the examination format at this stage would not be feasible in light of the prevailing circumstances. The Bench, however, posted the matter for further consideration on July 27, 2026.
The plea sought a direction to the authorities to hold the NEET-UG 2026 re-test through a computer-based system, contending that it would enhance transparency and efficiency in the examination process. The Court did not grant any interim relief and left the issue open for hearing on the next date.
