Former Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Tomin J. Thachankary has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and fined by the Vigilance Court in Kottayam in a disproportionate assets case.
The Kottayam Vigilance Court found Thachankary, who had served as the State Police Sub-Chief, guilty of accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income while holding public office. The case relates to allegations that he acquired assets beyond what could be justified by his known income during the period under investigation.
According to the Vigilance case, Thachankary accumulated disproportionate assets valued at approximately ₹64.70 lakh between January 2003 and July 2007. The prosecution alleged that the assets could not be satisfactorily accounted for in relation to his legitimate sources of income.
The case was registered following a complaint filed by Boby Kuruvilla. The Vigilance authorities subsequently investigated the allegations and filed a charge sheet in 2013.
The trial was completed pursuant to directions issued by the Kerala High Court for expeditious disposal of the long-pending case. After examining the evidence and material presented before it, the Kottayam Vigilance Court convicted the former senior police officer and imposed a four-year prison sentence along with a fine.
The conviction marks a significant development in a case concerning alleged corruption and the accumulation of assets by a senior public servant during his tenure in the police service. The case also highlights the legal scrutiny faced by public officials when their assets are found to be disproportionate to their known and lawful sources of income.
