Surajpur, October 2, 2026: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the District Court premises in Surajpur witnessed a meaningful Shramdaan (voluntary labour) programme aimed at translating Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of cleanliness, dignity of labour and collective responsibility into action.

The one-day cleanliness and Shramdaan programme was conducted on October 2, 2026, under the leadership of Shri Thomas Ekka, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Surajpur. The programme commenced with the garlanding of the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, paying tribute to the Father of the Nation and recalling his enduring message of cleanliness and social responsibility.

Organised with the message that cleanliness is not the responsibility of an individual but a collective responsibility, the programme saw enthusiastic participation from judicial officers of the District Court, the Judge of the Family Court, advocates associated with the Legal Aid Defense Counsel, members of the District Bar Association, judicial employees and Para-Legal Volunteers.

The participants actively engaged in cleaning activities across various parts of the court premises. Areas inside and outside the court complex were cleaned, accumulated waste was removed and disorganised spaces were brought into better order. Judicial officers, advocates and court employees participated personally in the Shramdaan, giving a practical expression to the principle of the dignity of labour.

The initiative carried a message beyond cleanliness alone. By participating together in physical labour, members of the judicial fraternity demonstrated that maintaining a clean and orderly public institution is a shared responsibility requiring the participation of every section of society.

For Mahatma Gandhi, cleanliness was closely connected with a healthy, disciplined and responsible society. The Shramdaan programme at the District Court, Surajpur, therefore served as a meaningful tribute to his ideals, transforming the spirit of Gandhi Jayanti into a practical effort towards cleanliness, community participation and respect for labour.
