Delhi High Court Defers Decision on First and Third Saturday Court Sittings Pending Committee Review

July 19, 2026 : The Delhi High Court has postponed the implementation of its earlier decision to designate the first and third Saturdays of every month as regular court sitting days. The move will remain on hold until a committee constituted by the Chief Justice conducts a comprehensive review of the proposal.

The decision was taken by the Full Court during its meeting held on July 9, 2026. As per the notification issued by the High Court, the Full Court resolved to keep in abeyance its earlier resolution dated December 22, 2025, which had been notified on January 15, 2026, introducing regular court sittings on the first and third Saturdays of every month.

According to the notification, the earlier resolution will not be implemented until the committee appointed by the Chief Justice examines all relevant aspects associated with the proposed Saturday sittings and submits its recommendations.

The January 2026 notification had proposed additional working Saturdays with the objective of improving judicial efficiency and expediting the disposal of pending cases. However, the High Court has now decided to reassess the proposal before bringing it into force.

Although the notification does not specify the reasons behind the deferment, the committee is expected to evaluate issues such as administrative feasibility, judicial workload, infrastructure requirements, and the likely impact on advocates, court staff, and litigants.

Based on the committee’s findings, the Full Court will take a final decision on whether regular sittings on the first and third Saturdays should be implemented. Until then, the existing working calendar and court roster of the Delhi High Court will continue without any changes.
