District Judge Reviews Facilities at Kanker Jail, Emphasises Legal Aid and Inmate Welfare

June 18, 2026 : Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Tamak, conducted an inspection of the District Jail in Kanker on Thursday to assess the facilities and overall conditions available to inmates. During the visit, he interacted with prisoners, heard their grievances, and apprised them of their legal rights and the legal assistance available to them.

Highlighting the importance of physical and mental well-being, Mr. Tamak encouraged inmates to maintain a disciplined routine, engage in regular exercise, and adopt a positive lifestyle. He also inspected the quality of food and drinking water being provided in the jail and directed the concerned officials to ensure that standards of hygiene and quality are consistently maintained.

The District Judge stressed that inmates who do not have legal representation must be provided with free legal aid without delay, ensuring that no individual is deprived of access to justice due to financial or other constraints. He instructed officials to remain responsive to the needs and concerns of prisoners and to facilitate timely assistance wherever required.

Reviewing the overall administration of the jail, Mr. Tamak underscored the need to promote the use of modern technology in prison management. He observed that technology-driven solutions could help address inmates’ issues more efficiently and improve the delivery of services within correctional institutions.

The inspection was attended by Superintendent of Police Mr. Nikhil Rakhecha, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mr. Bhaskar Mishra, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Mrs. Shanti Prabhu Jain, the Jail Superintendent, and other administrative officials.
