June 25, 2026 : The District Jail Visitors Board, headed by Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairperson of the District Legal Services Authority, Vinita Warner, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Surajpur District Jail to assess the living conditions of inmates, the quality of basic facilities, and the effectiveness of legal aid services being provided to prisoners.
During the inspection, the team visited various sections of the jail, including inmate barracks, the kitchen, the health centre, and other common areas. Officials interacted directly with inmates to understand their concerns and gather feedback on their daily living conditions. The inspection also evaluated sanitation, the quality and nutritional standards of food, the availability of medicines and healthcare services, educational programmes, recreational facilities, and the overall functioning of the Jail Legal Aid Clinic to ensure timely legal assistance for inmates.
Following the inspection, an Under Trial Review Committee meeting was held at the District Court. Principal District and Sessions Judge Vinita Warner directed the Jail Superintendent to ensure that inmates receive a clean environment, nutritious food, regular medical check-ups, and all essential facilities without interruption. She also reviewed the progress of the land allotted for the district court, the proposed design of the new court building, and the construction of residential quarters for judicial officers and staff, directing officials to complete the projects at the earliest.
District Collector Rena Jameel visited all prison barracks and interacted with inmates, placing special emphasis on education. She enquired whether any inmate’s education had been disrupted due to incarceration and encouraged those interested in continuing their studies. After a drinking water shortage was brought to her attention, she instructed the concerned authorities to improve water supply. She also directed Civil Surgeon Dr. Ajay Markam to ensure the availability of a psychiatrist at the jail twice a week.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (FTC) Anand Prakash Warrier informed inmates about their legal rights, including the right to seek bail, change legal counsel, and obtain information regarding their pending cases. He encouraged prisoners to freely share any grievances with the Jail Superintendent or Legal Aid advocates during inspection visits.
The inspection was attended by District Legal Services Authority Secretary Payal Topno, the Jail Superintendent, Jail Medical Officer Dr. L. K. Bhoi, the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, and other senior officials. The joint inspection was described as an important initiative aimed at safeguarding prisoners’ rights, improving their welfare, and ensuring effective access to justice.
