The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that a woman was brutally assaulted and publicly paraded in Rajasthan’s Banswara after her hair was forcibly cut by her husband and other relatives.
According to the report, the incident allegedly took place on September 1, 2026, and came to light after a video of the incident surfaced on social media. The woman was reportedly beaten with sticks and subjected to humiliating and inhuman treatment in full public view.
Taking note of the allegations, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Rajasthan and the Superintendent of Police, Banswara, seeking a detailed report on the matter.
The Commission has observed that, if the allegations reported in the media are found to be true, the incident raises serious concerns regarding the victim’s fundamental human rights, particularly her right to life and dignity.
The NHRC has directed the authorities to provide information regarding the status of the investigation and the action taken against those responsible. The authorities have also been asked to inform the Commission whether any compensation or other relief has been provided to the victim.
The case has drawn attention to allegations of public humiliation, physical violence and violation of the dignity of a woman. The Commission’s intervention seeks to ascertain the facts, ensure accountability and determine whether appropriate relief has been extended to the victim.
