NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of 53 Maternal Deaths in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi District, Seeks Report from State Government

June 2, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report highlighting the deaths of 53 pregnant and postpartum women in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district between April 2025 and March 2026. The deaths were reportedly linked to inadequate healthcare facilities, poor infrastructure, and a lack of awareness among expectant mothers.

Taking serious note of the matter, the Commission observed that the allegations, if found to be true, indicate a grave violation of human rights. It has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, directing the state government to submit a detailed report within two weeks.

According to the report published on May 29, 2026, the average age of the deceased women was 26 years, and most were first-time or second-time mothers. The report further revealed that Sidhi district has consistently ranked among the bottom three districts in the Community Maternal Health League grading conducted by the State Health Department.

The findings point to severe shortcomings in healthcare infrastructure across the district. Community Health Centres, Primary Health Centres, and even the District Hospital reportedly face a shortage of doctors and technical staff, forcing many patients to be referred to higher medical facilities in the distant Rewa district. These referrals often require long journeys, increasing health risks for women during critical stages of pregnancy and childbirth.

The situation is compounded by poor road connectivity in several villages of Sidhi district. An ambulance driver quoted in the report stated that during the monsoon season, many remote areas become difficult to access. In several cases, pregnant women reportedly have to be carried on cots for two to three kilometres before they can reach an ambulance, causing dangerous delays in emergency medical care.

The NHRC’s intervention has brought renewed attention to maternal healthcare challenges in rural and underserved regions, with the Commission seeking accountability and corrective measures from the state authorities.
