April 14, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India has sought responses from the Union Government and key authorities on a plea challenging the current framework for fixing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural produce.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to the Centre, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices.
The petition urges that MSP determination should give greater weight to state-specific cost of cultivation, arguing that the existing approach does not adequately reflect regional variations in agricultural inputs and expenses.
During the hearing, the Court observed that MSP fixation involves complex economic considerations, including disparities in land values, labour costs, and capital investment across states. It noted that adopting a uniform pricing policy may not be practical and acknowledged that the plea effectively seeks a re-evaluation of existing economic policy.
The petition relies on recommendations of the MS Swaminathan Commission, which proposed that MSP should be set at least 50 percent above the cost of production. It contends that current MSP levels fall short of this benchmark, impacting farmers’ income security.
The matter is now pending further consideration, with the Court awaiting responses from the concerned authorities.
