  • Supreme Court Objects to ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ Title, Makers Agree to Rename Manoj Bajpayee Film

Supreme Court of India | SCI | Law Notify

The controversy around Manoj Bajpayee’s upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat has escalated after the Supreme Court of India made strong remarks against the project’s title, describing it as derogatory and unacceptable. In response, the film’s producers have agreed to change the name before its release.

The issue began soon after the title was announced. Several groups objected to it, arguing that it portrayed a respected community identity in a negative light by linking it to corruption. Social media criticism quickly gained momentum, and legal petitions were filed seeking to stop the film from being released under the existing title.

When the matter came up for hearing, the apex court expressed serious concern over the choice of name. The bench observed that freedom of expression does not include the right to denigrate a community. It questioned the filmmakers about their decision to use a title that could potentially hurt sentiments and disturb social harmony.

The court made it clear that the film would not be allowed to release unless the title was changed. It directed the makers to return with a revised name and to file an affidavit confirming that the film’s content does not disparage any caste or community. The judges stressed that while creative freedom is protected, it must be exercised responsibly and in line with constitutional principles.

Following the court’s observations, the producers and Netflix India informed the bench that they are in the process of renaming the project. Promotional materials carrying the original title have reportedly been withdrawn, and the new name will be submitted before the court as directed.

The episode has triggered a wider conversation within the film industry about the line between artistic liberty and cultural sensitivity. Some believe filmmakers should have room to tell fictional stories without external pressure, while others argue that titles and narratives should not reinforce stereotypes or offend social groups.

For now, the release of the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer depends on compliance with the court’s directions. The revised title is awaited as the case continues to remain under judicial scrutiny.
