  • President Returns 2006 Freedom of Religion Amendment Bill; Sent Back to Assembly for Reconsideration

    Chhattisgarh Assembly | LawNotify.in

Raipur, March 16, 2026: The process related to the Freedom of Religion Amendment Bill passed in Chhattisgarh in 2006 has resumed after the President returned the proposed legislation. Following this, the Governor has sent the bill back to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly for reconsideration, clearing the way for the state government to introduce a new Freedom of Religion bill. The amendment bill was originally passed by the Chhattisgarh Assembly in 2006 during the tenure of the government led by then Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh. After being approved by the Assembly, it was sent to the President of India for assent as part of the constitutional procedure. After remaining pending for several years, the President has now returned the bill to the state government. Subsequently, the Governor has forwarded it to the Assembly for reconsideration. With the bill being sent back, the state government now has the option to introduce a fresh Freedom of Religion legislation in the Assembly. If a new bill is presented and passed, it could pave the way for a new legal framework governing provisions related to religious conversions in the state.
