Chhattisgarh Moves Towards Uniform Civil Code, Panel Headed by Justice Ranjana Desai to Draft Framework

April 15, 2026 : The Chhattisgarh Council of Ministers has taken a significant step towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held in Raipur under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

As part of the decision, the Cabinet approved the constitution of a committee chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. The committee has been tasked with preparing a draft framework for the proposed Uniform Civil Code.

The Chief Minister has been authorized to nominate other members to the panel. The committee will engage with citizens, civil society organisations, and subject-matter experts to gather inputs before finalising its recommendations.

Currently, personal laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and family relations vary across religious communities, often leading to legal complexity. The proposed UCC seeks to streamline these laws and introduce uniformity in civil matters across the state.

Once the draft is prepared, it will undergo the necessary legal scrutiny before being placed before the State Legislative Assembly for consideration.
