SC Calls for Grievance Panels to Resolve Bench-Bar Disputes Across India

May 12, 2026 : The Supreme Court has directed all high courts across the country to establish grievance redressal committees at the high court, district and taluka levels to ensure amicable resolution of disputes between judges and lawyers. The direction came while the apex court was hearing petitions related to a viral video allegedly showing an Andhra Pradesh High Court judge warning a young advocate of 24-hour judicial custody over an alleged procedural lapse.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi noted that even before formal communications were received from the Bar Council of India and the Supreme Court Bar Association regarding the incident, the CJI had sought a report from the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. According to the court, the report substantially addressed the concerns raised in the matter and clarified that the issue between the parties had already been resolved before the video clip surfaced on social media.

The Supreme Court underlined that judges at every level of the judiciary must display patience, compassion and a supportive approach, particularly while dealing with young members of the legal profession. Stressing the importance of mentoring new entrants to the bar, the court observed that young advocates, especially those practising in trial courts, should be guided and encouraged instead of being discouraged.

The apex court also directed the Bar Council of India and state bar councils to organise structured orientation programmes for newly enrolled advocates so that they are better equipped to understand courtroom procedures and professional responsibilities.

Highlighting the role of the media, the court cautioned against the circulation of decontextualised video clips, observing that irresponsible reporting of such incidents could create unwarranted prejudice and damage institutional credibility.
