May 16, 2026 : Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday issued a clarification over his controversial “cockroach” remarks, stating that sections of the media had distorted his observations and wrongly portrayed them as an insult to India’s unemployed youth.
Responding to the growing outrage, the CJI said he was deeply pained by reports claiming that he had demeaned young Indians struggling with unemployment. He clarified that his remarks were never directed at unemployed youth, but at individuals allegedly using fake and fraudulent degrees to infiltrate respected professions, particularly within the legal system.
The controversy arose after oral observations made during a Supreme Court hearing on May 15 went viral on social media. During the proceedings, the Bench had expressed concern over what it described as “parasites” weakening institutions and referred to certain individuals as “cockroaches” while discussing alleged misuse of professional platforms, activism, and attacks on the judiciary through social media campaigns.
In his clarification, Justice Kant drew a clear distinction between unemployed youth and those accused of exploiting fake credentials to gain entry into professions such as law, media, and public advocacy. He said the observations were intended to protect the credibility and integrity of institutions, not to disparage India’s younger generation.
The Chief Justice also praised India’s youth, describing them as the “pillars of a developed India,” and said the country’s human capital continued to inspire confidence and hope for the future.
The original remarks were made during hearings related to senior advocate designation and concerns surrounding allegedly dubious law degrees. The Bench had also indicated the possibility of a deeper inquiry into the authenticity of qualifications held by certain legal practitioners.
The episode has reignited debate over judicial language, institutional accountability, and growing public sensitivity around unemployment, dissent, and criticism of institutions in contemporary India.
