Fresh Twist in RG Kar Case as High Court Orders SIT Probe

Calcutta High Court Orders CBI SIT Probe Into RG Kar Doctor Rape-Murder Case

May 22, 2026 : The Calcutta High Court has directed the formation of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the sequence of events surrounding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The case had triggered nationwide outrage and widespread protests by the medical fraternity over allegations of mishandling of evidence and attempts to suppress the incident.

A division bench comprising Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh directed that the SIT be headed by the CBI’s Joint Director (East). The remaining two members of the team are to be appointed within 48 hours of the order.

The bench observed that the shocking nature of the crime and its wider social ramifications required a deeper investigation into allegations of evidence destruction and claims made by the victim’s parents that efforts were made to hush up and downplay the incident immediately after the crime.

The SIT has been specifically tasked with examining developments from the time the trainee doctor had dinner at the hospital on the night of August 9, 2024, until her cremation the following evening. The court has directed the team to submit a comprehensive report by June 25, when the matter will be taken up for further hearing.

The victim’s parents approached the high court seeking further investigation into the case, alleging that more than one person may have been involved in the brutal crime.
