Calcutta High Court Forms SIT to Probe RG Kar Rape-Murder Case, Seeks Report by June 25

May 21, 2026 : The Calcutta High Court has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a fresh probe into the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. The three-member SIT will be headed by the Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation for the Eastern Zone, with the Court directing the team to submit its report by June 25.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh instructed the CBI to reconstruct the sequence of events beginning from the victim’s dinner on August 9, 2024, up to her cremation. The Bench granted the agency liberty to investigate every connected aspect of the case.

The order came in response to repeated concerns raised by the victim’s family, who alleged suppression of facts and tampering with evidence during the investigation. Stressing the need for a thorough and transparent probe, the Court observed that the SIT must examine every detail surrounding the incident.
