June 1, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India has received five new judges following their appointment by the President of India, taking the apex court’s working strength to 37 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
Announcing the appointments through a social media post, Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, had appointed five judges to the Supreme Court.
According to notifications issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; and Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, have been elevated as judges of the Supreme Court.
In addition, senior advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana has been appointed as a judge of the apex court.
The appointments come shortly after the Centre promulgated an ordinance last month amending the relevant law to increase the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 33 to 37 judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India. The move is aimed at enhancing the Court’s capacity to deal with its growing caseload and improving the pace of judicial adjudication.
