Durg Judiciary Holds Seminar Ahead of Special Lok Adalat for NI Act Section 138 Cases Scheduled on July 18

June 10, 2026 : In preparation for the Special Lok Adalat scheduled to be held on July 18 for the settlement of cheque dishonour cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, a seminar was organized on Wednesday at the New Auditorium of the District and Sessions Court, Durg.

The programme was conducted in compliance with the directions issued by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), New Delhi, and the Chhattisgarh State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), Bilaspur. It aimed to ensure the effective conduct of the Special Lok Adalat and to create awareness among legal stakeholders regarding the benefits of alternative dispute resolution in cheque bounce matters.

The seminar witnessed participation from judicial officers of the district judiciary, office-bearers and members of the Durg Bar Association, elected members of the State Bar Council from Durg district, court officials, and staff members. Discussions focused on the objectives, significance, and utility of the Special Lok Adalat, particularly its role in facilitating speedy, cost-effective, and amicable resolution of disputes arising under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Speakers highlighted the growing importance of Lok Adalats in reducing litigation and easing the burden on courts. Advocates were urged to educate their clients about the upcoming Special Lok Adalat, identify cases suitable for settlement, and encourage parties to explore amicable resolution through the forum.

Addressing the gathering, the Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Durg, described the Special Lok Adalat as an effective mechanism for delivering accessible, affordable, and expeditious justice. He called upon members of the Bar to actively assist in identifying settlement-worthy matters and to make litigants aware of the advantages of resolving disputes through Lok Adalats.

Expressing confidence in the coordinated efforts of the judiciary and the legal fraternity, he stated that a substantial number of pending cheque dishonour cases could be resolved amicably through the Special Lok Adalat, thereby strengthening the efficiency of the justice delivery system.
