The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of Mansa-based anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Punjab. A team led by a senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) level officer will examine the case, reviewing all facts and figures.
The investigative agency’s team reached Mansa Police Station late last night to take over the records, and a new FIR has been registered by the agency. Forensic experts, drug controllers, and other specialists are also arriving in Mansa. According to sources, the victim’s post-mortem will be conducted by a team of doctors at PGI Chandigarh, and an inquiry will be carried out by a Chandigarh-based Magistrate.
Akashvani Jalandhar Correspondent reports that the action came within hours of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s assurance of a CBI probe, given when he met Parvinder Singh’s family during his day-long visit to Punjab yesterday. Jhota was shot dead last week by a chemist, Ashwani Kumar, when he confronted the chemist for selling synthetic drugs.
The Home Minister also met the family of another anti-drug activist, Vikramjit Singh, in Gurdaspur, who was allegedly killed by drug traffickers for objecting to the sale of drugs. He assured justice to the family of Gulzar Singh, who allegedly committed suicide in Sangrur recently after his pleas against drug sales—which led to his son becoming an addict—went unheard by the state government.
