New Delhi: Drug regulatory and law enforcement agencies have intensified coordinated action against the illegal manufacture and distribution of misbranded and substandard drugs in the national capital.
The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has been maintaining continuous surveillance to identify criminal activities involving the manufacture and distribution of misbranded and spurious drugs. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) works closely with the Delhi Police and other enforcement agencies whenever leads concerning such illegal activities emerge.
As part of the ongoing surveillance and enforcement efforts, the Delhi Crime Branch seized a batch of misbranded and not-of-standard-quality rabies vaccine in April this year from an unlicensed premises in Delhi.
Following the seizure, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), through a communication dated August 27, directed all State Drugs Controllers to alert their drug inspectorate teams and maintain strict vigilance over the movement, distribution and availability of the identified misbranded vaccine batch.
The DCGI has also confirmed that no portion of the concerned batch was exported to any other country. Authorities further clarified that vaccines administered at hospitals, clinics and government healthcare facilities are dispensed only through licensed pharmacies.
The Delhi Police has so far arrested four persons in connection with the case. The authorities continue to investigate the matter and monitor the supply and distribution chain to prevent the circulation of misbranded and spurious drugs.
