Bilaspur : The Chhattisgarh High Court has taken a firm stance on a petition concerning the alleged neglect of service conditions and discrimination against former Salwa Judum personnel inducted into the Chhattisgarh Armed Police Force. Hearing the matter, the Court has issued a notice to the state government, directing it to file a clear response within six weeks. The final verdict in the case is still pending.
The petition filed by the personnel alleges serious neglect of their service rights, eligibility entitlements, and the right to equality over a prolonged period.
Violation of the Right to Equality
Advocates Fatesh Kumar Sahu and Vidyabhushan Soni jointly appeared before the High Court on behalf of the petitioner personnel. They prominently raised the issue of fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India. The counsel argued that the personnel are being denied their constitutional rights to equality of opportunity in public employment and equality before the law. Despite long years of service, these personnel continue to face persistent discrimination, which is severely undermining their legitimate service interests.
Plea for Equitable Consideration of Service Rights
Through their petition, the personnel have urged the High Court to ensure that their service conditions and eligibility entitlements are considered in an equitable manner. The petitioners contend that a proper resolution of this long-standing alleged discrimination is essential. The personnel inducted into the Chhattisgarh Armed Police Force have sought protection of their service-related rights and entitlements. After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court has sought a response from the state government. The next hearing in the matter will be held after the government submits its reply.
Background of the Salwa Judum Movement
Salwa Judum was a major anti-Naxal movement that began in the Bastar region around 2005. Several local youths associated with the movement were initially appointed as Special Police Officers (SPOs). In 2011, the Supreme Court imposed a ban on the use of SPOs in armed anti-Naxal operations. Following the Supreme Court’s order, some personnel associated with Salwa Judum were inducted into the Chhattisgarh Armed Police Force. Given their long-standing service, the High Court is now reviewing the entire matter.
