May 12, 2026 : Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has constituted a Judicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee to assess infrastructural shortcomings in courts across the country and prepare recommendations for a proposed government allocation of Rs 40,000-50,000 crore aimed at strengthening the judicial system.
The committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive infrastructure audit of the subordinate judiciary as well as higher judicial institutions. It has been directed to submit its report to Sanjeev Sanyal by August 31. The report is expected to outline a long-term framework for capital expenditure and future judicial infrastructure development.
The committee will be headed by Supreme Court judge Aravind Kumar. Its members include Debangsu Basak, Ashwani Kumar Mishra, Somasekhar Sundaresan, the Director General of the Central Public Works Department, and the Secretary General of the Supreme Court.
The panel has been entrusted with examining structural and administrative bottlenecks affecting the justice delivery system. Its mandate includes evaluating infrastructure requirements for judges, advocates, litigants, and court visitors, while also recommending measures for technological integration to ensure faster disposal of cases.
The committee will further focus on digitisation and computerisation of courts under the e-Courts framework, improving citizen-centric judicial services, reducing the digital divide in access to justice, developing modern court complexes, and enhancing workplace infrastructure and service conditions for judicial officers and court staff.
