May 7, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed former Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud as mediator in the family trust dispute between late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur and his wife Priya Kapur.
A bench of Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan directed the parties to participate in mediation proceedings with an open mind and restrained them from making public statements or discussing the matter on social media.
Observing that the matter was a private family dispute, the bench remarked that it should remain confined within the family and not become “a source of entertainment.” The Court noted that it had earlier, on April 27, suggested mediation considering the nature of the conflict, and all parties had now agreed to the proposal.
The apex court said it would await a preliminary report from the mediator before proceeding further and listed the matter for hearing in August.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had issued notice to Priya Kapur and others on a plea filed by 80-year-old Rani Kapur seeking to declare the family trust, constituted in October 2017 in her name, as “null and void.” Rani Kapur alleged that the trust was created on the basis of “forged, fabricated and fraudulent” documents.
Proceedings relating to the control of the estate and trust assets are also pending before the Delhi High Court. The petition before the Supreme Court seeks maintenance of status quo regarding alienation of the trust properties. (PTI)
