JPC Holds Extensive Consultations in Bengaluru on ‘One Nation One Election’ Bill

May 16, 2026 : The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the proposed ‘One Nation One Election’ Bill conducted extensive consultations in Bengaluru yesterday with political leaders, members of the legal fraternity and representatives of civil society organisations.

Addressing the media, JPC Chairman P P Chaudhary said Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Veerappa Moily, along with representatives from the BJP and other political parties, shared their views on the proposed legislation, which has been referred to the committee by Parliament.

Chaudhary stated that the committee is gathering objections, suggestions and recommendations during its visits to various states as part of the wider consultation process. He acknowledged that synchronising Lok Sabha and Assembly elections across the country would involve significant constitutional and administrative challenges.

According to him, implementing simultaneous elections may require the premature dissolution of certain state Assemblies and would also necessitate addressing issues linked to anti-defection laws, no-confidence motions and the imposition of President’s Rule.

The JPC Chairman further argued that frequent elections are not in the national interest, saying repeated enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct affects development works and disrupts economic activities. He added that sectors such as tourism, education, banking and other government-related services are also adversely impacted during continuous election cycles.
