Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Elevation of Nine Advocates as Judges of Calcutta High Court

May 12, 2026 : The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended the elevation of nine advocates as judges of the Calcutta High Court. The decision was taken during meetings held on May 11 and 12, 2026, as part of the ongoing process of appointments to the higher judiciary.

The Collegium was headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and included Justices BV Nagarathna, JK Maheshwari, Vikram Nath and MM Sundresh as members.

The advocates recommended for elevation are Indranil Roy, Aryak Dutt, Atarup Banerjee, Sandip Kumar De, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee and Rishad Medora.

The appointments will come into effect after the Union government processes the Collegium’s recommendations and the President of India issues the warrants of appointment in accordance with the constitutional procedure governing judicial appointments.

The Calcutta High Court currently has a sanctioned strength of 72 judges, including 54 permanent judges and 18 additional judges. As of May 1, 2026, the High Court was functioning with 42 judges, comprising 31 permanent judges and 11 additional judges, leaving 30 posts vacant.

If the recommendations are approved by the Centre, the working strength of the High Court will increase to 51 judges.
