May 9, 2026 : The Supreme Court has strongly criticised the Madhya Pradesh government for delaying its decision on granting sanction to prosecute minister Kunwar Vijay Shah over his alleged remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. Observing that “enough is enough,” the apex court directed the state government to take a final call within two weeks.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed concern over the prolonged inaction despite recommendations reportedly made months ago by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The court said such delays weaken the criminal justice process and stressed that governments must act within a reasonable time when prosecution sanction is sought.
The controversy arose after Shah allegedly made remarks targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had gained national recognition for her role during Operation Sindoor briefings. The remarks triggered widespread public outrage and political criticism. Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had directed registration of an FIR in the matter.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court noted that the SIT had already sought sanction to prosecute Shah under provisions related to promoting enmity and communal disharmony. The bench made it clear that pending proceedings cannot be cited as a reason for administrative delay.
The court’s sharp observations are being viewed as a significant message on accountability and timely action in cases involving public representatives. The matter will now be taken up again after the Madhya Pradesh government places its decision on prosecution sanction before the court within the stipulated period.
