June 15, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought responses from the Centre and all States and Union Territories on a petition alleging the misuse of Aadhaar cards issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as proof of citizenship, domicile and residential address.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V. Mohan issued notices to the Centre, States and Union Territories while hearing the plea, which urged that Aadhaar be used strictly for identity verification purposes and not as evidence of citizenship or domicile.
The petition further argued that the current verification mechanism under Form-6 is inadequate and could potentially allow individuals lacking proper supporting documents to be included in the electoral database.
