Supreme Court Seeks Responses on Plea for 30% Reservation for Women Lawyers in Government Panels

May 20, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre, all States and Union Territories on a Public Interest Litigation seeking 30 per cent reservation for women advocates in government legal panels and law officer appointments.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant sought responses on the plea filed by a trust, which has sought directions to ensure at least 30 per cent representation for women lawyers across government legal bodies.

The petition seeks reservation for women advocates in legal panels and appointments ranging from the Supreme Court and High Courts to legal aid authorities and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
