May 20, 2026 : The Telangana High Court has issued stringent directions to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Traffic Police authorities to speed up the removal of illegal encroachments from footpaths and pavements across Hyderabad.
The Court further directed the authorities to ensure that such encroachments do not reappear after their removal.
The matter came before the Court through a petition filed by a group of senior citizens, who highlighted the deteriorating condition of roads and pedestrian pathways in Hyderabad and surrounding towns. The petitioners alleged that footpaths have been occupied by garbage dumps, illegal stalls, and unauthorised parking, creating serious inconvenience and safety risks for pedestrians.
Taking note of the concerns, the High Court sought a detailed progress report from the concerned authorities regarding the action taken to clear the encroachments and maintain pedestrian access.
The matter has been posted for further hearing on June 9.
