New Delhi : The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday postponed the final hearing on a batch of petitions questioning the Election Commission’s decision to carry out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in multiple states, including Bihar. The matter will now be taken up on January 13.

A bench led by Justice Surya Kant, which had initially scheduled the petitions for hearing earlier in the day, said the proceedings would resume on the new date.

During the earlier hearing on Tuesday, the Election Commission of India defended its decision, asserting that it has the constitutional authority and statutory competence to conduct a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Commission also told the court that it has a constitutional obligation to ensure that no foreign nationals are enrolled as voters.

The petitions before the court challenge the EC’s move to undertake the SIR exercise across several states, raising concerns over its timing and scope. The Supreme Court is expected to hear detailed arguments from all sides when the matter comes up next week.
