February 28, 2026 : National Science Day is being celebrated across India today, marking the importance of scientific research and innovation in national development. The day is observed every year on 28 February to honour the discovery of the Raman Effect by renowned physicist C. V. Raman.
On this day in 1928, Sir Raman announced his pathbreaking discovery, which later earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The Raman Effect explained how light changes when it passes through a transparent material, opening new paths in the field of spectroscopy and modern physics. His achievement placed India firmly on the global scientific map.
Across the country, universities, research institutions, and schools are organising theme-based science communication programmes. These include lectures, exhibitions, quiz competitions, workshops, and interactive sessions aimed at encouraging young minds to take interest in science and research.
The national-level celebration is being organised by the Department of Science and Technology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. The main event is being held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
The theme for National Science Day 2026 is “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat.” The focus this year is on recognising the contribution of women scientists, researchers, and innovators in strengthening India’s scientific ecosystem. The theme also connects scientific progress with the broader national goal of building a developed and self-reliant India.
National Science Day serves as a reminder that scientific thinking, research, and innovation are essential for social and economic growth. It also highlights the need to create inclusive opportunities so that more women and young researchers can actively shape the future of science in the country.
