March 26, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported deaths of 16 persons in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, allegedly caused by the consumption of adulterated milk.
Acting on a media report published on March 23, 2026, the Commission noted that the deaths occurred in Lalacheruvu, Chowdeshwarannagar, and Swarupnagar areas since mid-February. Several others have also reportedly fallen ill, with at least four individuals currently undergoing medical treatment for similar symptoms.
Initial findings indicate that the milk was contaminated with Ethylene glycol, a hazardous substance known to cause severe organ damage and renal failure. The source of the contaminated supply is suspected to be a dairy unit operating from Narsapuram village, which was distributing milk to over 100 households in the affected localities.
Taking serious note of the incident, the Commission observed that the matter, if substantiated, raises grave concerns of violation of the right to life. Accordingly, notices have been issued to the State Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, directing them to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.
The NHRC has specifically sought details regarding the health condition of those affected, the progress of the ongoing investigation, and the compensation, if any, provided to the families of the deceased.
As per reports, the cases first emerged in mid-February when residents began experiencing acute symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, anuria, and kidney dysfunction. A majority of the victims were elderly persons and children, intensifying concerns over public health and safety standards.
The incident has once again highlighted lapses in food safety monitoring and the urgent need for stricter regulatory oversight to prevent such occurrences.
