June 22, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of reports regarding the death of two women workers and the hospitalization of several others following an ammonia gas leak at a private shrimp processing factory in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on 21 June 2026 when ammonia leaked from the factory premises. At the time of the accident, workers were reportedly resting in a nearby room and were exposed to the toxic gas. The incident resulted in the death of at least two women, while dozens of workers fell ill and required immediate medical attention.
Taking note of the reported facts, the NHRC observed that if the allegations are found to be true, the incident raises serious concerns relating to human rights violations and workplace safety. The Commission has accordingly issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu and the Director General of Police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission has directed the state authorities to provide information regarding the health condition of the affected workers and the steps taken for their treatment. It has also sought details about the compensation and relief announced by the state government for the next of kin of the deceased workers.
As per reports published on 22 June 2026, a total of 59 workers were admitted to various hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur after the gas leak. In response to the incident, the Tamil Nadu government has reportedly constituted a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident and determine accountability.
The NHRC’s intervention underscores the importance of ensuring industrial safety standards and protecting the rights and well-being of workers employed in hazardous environments. The Commission is expected to review the state government’s report once it is submitted and may take further action based on its findings.
