June 23, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding an ammonia gas leak at a private shrimp processing factory in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district, which allegedly claimed the lives of at least two women workers and left several others ill.
According to reports, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, when employees were resting in a nearby room during a break. The leaked ammonia gas reportedly spread rapidly, affecting a large number of workers present at the facility.
Observing that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of human rights violations, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu. The Commission has directed them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has further sought information on the current health status of the affected workers and the disbursement of compensation announced by the state government to the next of kin of the deceased workers.
As per media reports published on June 22, 2026, a total of 59 workers were admitted to various hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur following the gas leak. The incident has raised concerns over workplace safety standards and occupational health protections in industrial establishments.
In response to the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu government has reportedly ordered the constitution of a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the ammonia leak and to determine accountability.
The Commission’s intervention underscores the importance of ensuring safe working conditions for industrial workers and enforcing strict compliance with safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
