April 27, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India on Monday initiated suo motu proceedings over the brutal assault of a woman advocate by her husband, directing an investigation into allegations that multiple hospitals denied her emergency treatment.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice J. Joymalya Bagchi took cognisance of a letter submitted by advocate Sneha Kalita concerning the attack on her colleague practising at Karkardooma courts.
According to submissions before the Court, the victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to several hospitals that allegedly refused to admit her. She was eventually treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where her condition has since stabilised.
Authorities informed the Court that an FIR has been registered and the accused husband has been arrested. Expressing serious concern over the reported denial of medical care, the Bench directed the investigating officer to examine the circumstances surrounding the refusal of admission and file a status report.
The Court also instructed the police to trace the couple’s two missing children, noting that the eldest child will remain in the custody of the maternal grandparents for now. Additionally, the Bench directed the National Legal Services Authority to provide interim financial assistance to the victim.
