April 14, 2026 : The Chhattisgarh High Court has directed the Mission Director of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to file a personal affidavit detailing the receipt and utilisation of ₹536.53 crore in central funds allocated to the state.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal passed the order while hearing a suo motu public interest litigation on Monday. The matter has been listed for further monitoring on May 7.
During the hearing, counsel for the Union of India referred to a communication dated April 11 issued by an Under Secretary of the Government of India. The letter stated that the Union Cabinet has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission till December 2028 with an enhanced financial outlay under its restructured phase, JJM 2.0, which focuses on structural reforms in rural drinking water supply.
The Centre informed the court that it had considered the Chhattisgarh government’s proposal submitted in March 2026 and released ₹536.53 crore for the financial year 2025–26 in accordance with JJM 2.0 guidelines. It also indicated that the state may submit additional proposals for fund allocation in the financial year 2026–27.
The court has sought a clear response from the Mission Director, JJM, Public Health Engineering Department, Nava Raipur, on whether the funds have been received and how they have been utilised under the scheme.
