Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission Directs Marriage of Couple Living Together for Six Years, Issues Key Maintenance Orders in Jashpur

June 22, 2026 : The Chhattisgarh State Women’s Commission, led by Chairperson Dr. Kiranmayee Nayak and Member Priyamvada Singh Judev, conducted hearings on cases related to women’s harassment and other grievances at the Jashpur Collectorate on Monday. A total of 401 cases were taken up across the state, including 10 cases from Jashpur district.

In a significant case, the Commission directed officials to initiate the marriage process of a couple who have been living together for the past six years. During the hearing, the respondent, currently serving in the Indian Army, acknowledged that he had been in a live-in relationship with the applicant for several years and that they have a daughter together. Instead of pursuing an FIR, the woman expressed her desire to marry legally, to which the respondent agreed. The Commission instructed officials of the Women and Child Development Department to begin the formal marriage process and submit a report within two months. It also ordered the respondent to pay a monthly maintenance amount of ₹10,000.

In another case, the Commission intervened in a complaint against a CRPF personnel accused of neglecting the maintenance of his wife and two children. During the proceedings, the respondent agreed to provide ₹20,000 per month towards their upkeep. The Commission directed the Protection Officer to ensure regular monitoring of compliance.

In a land dispute matter, both parties were advised to approach the Tehsildar for demarcation of the land and to secure possession through due legal process. The Commission also addressed a housing-related complaint filed by a staff nurse posted at the Community Health Centre in Farsabahar. It directed the concerned department to immediately repair the allotted government accommodation and provide House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per rules during the repair period.

Several cases were resolved through mutual consent and settlement during the hearing. Meanwhile, one matter already pending before a court was closed by the Commission on the grounds that it was not maintainable for further consideration. The Women’s Commission urged all parties to promote dialogue, follow legal provisions, and remain aware of the rights and protections available to women.
