April 9, 2026 : A shocking case of cyber fraud has surfaced from Basna block in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, where a government school teacher was targeted with a fake notice in an attempt to extort money. Timely alertness, however, helped him avoid falling victim to the scam.
According to available information, Nand Kishore Sahu, a teacher posted in a government school in Basna, received a notice on March 30 from an unknown mobile number claiming to be from the “Crime Branch, Raipur.” The notice alleged that obscene videos were being accessed through his mobile phone and Gmail account, which supposedly violated Government of India regulations. It further threatened him with one year of imprisonment, a fine of ₹1 lakh, and suspension from service.
The notice also claimed that the information would be shared in his departmental BRC group, which caused significant mental distress. Concerned about the implications, the teacher immediately contacted a trusted friend. Acting on the friend’s advice, he identified the message as fraudulent and chose not to respond.
Subsequently, the same number called him, with the caller impersonating the Station House Officer (TI) of Basna police station. The caller threatened arrest over allegations of viewing obscene content online. Sensing foul play, the teacher handed the phone to his politically active friend, who confronted and reprimanded the caller.
Upon further verification, it became clear that the incident was a premeditated cyber fraud attempt. Fraudsters often impersonate government officials to create panic and pressure victims into making quick payments. After the call, the number was switched off. The caller ID displayed the name “Santosh Kumar TI” along with a profile photo in police uniform, lending false credibility to the scam.
Cyber experts warn that such tactics are increasingly common, where criminals exploit fear and urgency. Many victims, out of panic, end up paying without verifying the authenticity of such claims. This incident once again highlights that awareness and caution are the most effective defenses against cybercrime.
Authorities and cyber experts continue to urge citizens not to trust suspicious messages or calls blindly. Individuals should verify the authenticity of such communications and report them to the nearest cyber police station if needed.
