Maldives Travel Warning: NCB Issues Strict Advisory Over New Anti-Drug Laws

April 23, 2026 : The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has issued a critical advisory for Indian citizens traveling to the Maldives following a major overhaul of the island nation’s anti-narcotics legislation. Under the amended Maldives’ Drugs Act, which took effect in March 2026, penalties for drug-related crimes have been drastically increased. Travelers now face severe consequences, including life imprisonment, even for the possession of minor quantities of prohibited substances.

This warning comes after a rise in arrests involving foreign nationals, including Indian citizens. In coordination with the High Commission of India in Malé, authorities are urging travelers to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to local laws. Travelers must never accept packages or items from others to carry on their behalf and should maintain constant, direct supervision of all personal luggage to prevent tampering. It is vital to personally verify all baggage contents before departure.

The NCB reinforces its zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking and encourages anyone who encounters suspicious activity to contact the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline at 1933. Staying informed and vigilant is essential to ensuring a safe trip and avoiding the life-altering legal repercussions of the Maldives’ new judicial framework.
