May 4, 2026 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on track to retain power in Assam for a third consecutive term, as early counting trends and declared results indicate a clear advantage for the ruling alliance. Out of the 126 assembly constituencies, results have been declared for 39 seats so far, with the BJP securing 31 of them. Its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), have won 2 and 5 seats respectively. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has managed to win one seat.
Trends from the remaining 87 constituencies further strengthen the BJP-led NDA’s position. The BJP is leading in 50 seats, while AGP is ahead in 6 and BPF in 5. The Congress is currently leading in 21 seats, followed by AIUDF in 1, Raijor Dal in 2, and others in 2 seats. The majority mark in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly stands at 64 seats.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading from the Jalukbari constituency against his Congress rival Bidisha Neog. In a significant contest, BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami has defeated Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi in the Jorhat seat. Cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika is also ahead in Jagiroad, leading over Congress candidate Sri Bubul Das.
Meanwhile, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, contesting from Binnakandi in Hojai district, is leading against AJP candidate Rejaul Karim Chowdhury.
Polling for all 126 seats was conducted on April 9, recording a high voter turnout of 85.96 percent, one of the highest in the state’s electoral history. The BJP-led NDA includes key allies AGP and BPF, while the opposition alliance comprises Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), CPI(M), All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), and CPI(ML).
With counting still underway, the BJP appears well-positioned to cross the majority mark comfortably and continue its rule in the state.
