BJP Surges in Bengal, Vijay’s TVK Makes Strong Debut in Tamil Nadu as Early Trends Hold Across States

May 4, 2026 : Initial trends in the counting of votes across four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry have largely held steady as the day progresses, indicating clear leads in multiple regions.

In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a surprising and commanding lead, ahead in 192 of the 293 constituencies where counting is underway. The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is trailing with leads in 94 seats, suggesting a potential shift in the state’s political landscape.

Tamil Nadu has witnessed a dramatic development with actor C. Joseph Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making an impressive electoral debut. The party is leading in 112 out of 234 seats. The opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is in second place with 58 seats, while the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has slipped to third with 47 leads. Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is ahead in five seats and the Indian National Congress is leading in four.

In Assam, the BJP appears set to retain dominance. Out of 126 constituencies, results for seven seats have been declared, with BJP winning six and leading in 73 more. Its ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has secured one seat and is ahead in eight. The Congress is leading in 24 constituencies, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is ahead in 10.

Kerala trends indicate a strong performance by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which has won six seats and is leading in 55. The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has secured four seats and is ahead in 23, while its ally Communist Party of India (CPI) leads in nine seats. Other allies, including Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and Kerala Congress, are also registering gains. The BJP is leading in two constituencies.

In Puducherry, results for 13 seats have been declared so far. The ruling All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) has won eight seats and is leading in one. The Congress has secured one seat and is ahead in six, while the DMK has won one and leads in three. The BJP has won two seats and is leading in two more, while the AIADMK has secured one seat. Independents have also made their presence felt, winning two seats and leading in one.
