Bamboo Fencing Along NH-130 to Curb Cattle Entry, Boost Road Safety in Bilaspur Stretch

April 26, 2026 : In a bid to improve road safety and prevent stray cattle from entering highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out a bamboo fencing initiative along the Simga–Bilaspur stretch of National Highway 130 (NH-130), which connects Raipur and Bilaspur.

Under the project, nearly seven kilometres of bamboo fencing is currently being installed at locations identified as high-risk zones for cattle movement. These include Baikoni, Damakheda, Dekuna, Nandghat, Temri, Kirna, Hardikala, Silpahari, and Dheka—areas where animals frequently stray onto the highway, posing serious risks to fast-moving traffic.

Officials say the fencing aims to protect both motorists and livestock. By preventing cattle from wandering onto the road, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce sudden obstructions and lower the chances of accidents, particularly on high-speed corridors.

Mukesh Kumar, Project Director of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) in Bilaspur, noted that early field inspections have shown encouraging results. According to him, the bamboo fencing is effectively acting as a barrier while also offering durability and environmental benefits. He added that the use of bamboo makes the solution both sustainable and suitable for long-term deployment.
