April 10, 2026 : A second-year BTech student died after falling from the ninth floor of a hostel building in north Bengaluru, triggering serious questions about the circumstances surrounding his death and prompting allegations of foul play by his family.
The deceased, Lakshya (also reported as Laksh) Mishra, aged between 19 and 21, was a student at Manipal Academy of Higher Education and hailed from Ranchi in Jharkhand. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at a hostel located in Yelahanka New Town, within the limits of the local police station.
According to police, Mishra reportedly fell from the ninth floor around 1.30 am to 3 am. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and stated that the investigation is ongoing.
The student’s father, Anjani Kumar Mishra, has strongly contested the version presented by the institution. He alleged inconsistencies in the information provided and raised doubts after examining both the location and his son’s body.
“I was first informed around 3.30 am that my son had fallen. Shortly after, I was told he had died. When I saw his body, there were no deep injuries consistent with a fall from such a height,” he said. He also questioned the physical feasibility of the fall, stating that the window from which his son allegedly fell was too narrow.
He further pointed to the condition of the scene, claiming there was minimal blood at the spot. “If someone falls from the ninth floor, the injuries and blood loss would be significant. It does not appear to be a straightforward fall,” he said, adding that there was no apparent reason for his son to take such an extreme step.
Calling for a thorough and impartial investigation, he alleged that the college authorities were “not telling the truth” and may be concealing crucial details.
Police officials, however, have urged caution. A senior officer stated that CCTV footage shows the student walking alone on the ninth floor shortly before the incident. “It is too early to draw conclusions. We are examining all possibilities, including accidental fall and other angles,” he said.
Investigators are currently questioning faculty members and reviewing available evidence. The institution has not issued an official statement on the matter.
The case continues to remain under active investigation as authorities attempt to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the student’s death.
