January 20, 2026 : The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has formally notified the area surrounding Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Aravalli Range, as an Eco-Sensitive Zone. The move is aimed at strengthening ecological protection while supporting communities living in and around the protected forest landscape.
In a social media post, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav said the decision would play a dual role. Along with conserving the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity, the notification is expected to encourage sustainable development options for indigenous and local populations.
According to the minister, the Eco-Sensitive Zone will cover areas extending from zero to one kilometre around the sanctuary. This region is known for its diverse wildlife, including leopard, striped hyena, jungle cat, Indian pangolin, blue bull and chinkara. The habitat also supports a variety of bird species, notably the painted francolin.
Mr Yadav added that the government plans to promote eco-friendly and community-oriented activities such as organic farming and agroforestry in the zone. Skill development programmes will also be encouraged to help residents build sustainable livelihoods without putting pressure on the fragile ecosystem.
