NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Death of Two Sanitation Workers Cleaning Sewer Without Safety Gear in Faridabad

May 7, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported death of two sanitation workers who allegedly died while cleaning a sewer without protective equipment in Greater Faridabad, Haryana.

According to a press release issued by the Commission on 7 May 2026, the incident occurred on 2 May 2026 at the Puri Pranam Society in Greater Faridabad. The workers reportedly entered a manhole on the directions of the Estate Manager of the residential society without being provided safety gear, oxygen support, or gas masks.

Taking serious note of the matter, the NHRC observed that the contents of the media report, if true, disclose a grave violation of human rights. The Commission has accordingly issued notices to the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Faridabad and the Commissioner of Police, Faridabad, Haryana, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

The Commission stated that the report should specifically include the status of the investigation into the incident as well as details regarding compensation paid to the next of kin of the deceased workers.

While issuing the notices, the NHRC expressed concern that such incidents continue to recur despite repeated directions issued by the Supreme Court and advisories issued by the Commission regarding the mechanised cleaning of sewers and mandatory safety measures for sanitation workers.

The Commission reiterated that sewer cleaning without adequate protective equipment poses serious risks to life and dignity and reflects continuing lapses in the implementation of safety protocols meant to protect sanitation workers across the country.
